Water Charges Campaign

All water bills to be capped until the end of 2018

This year we ran a campaign to ensure that people living with dementia would be entitled to have their water bills capped. In May 2014 we made a submission to the Commission for Energy Regulation on the 'Domestic Water Tariff Principles and Proposals' and we also wrote to the relevant Ministers asking them to ensure that dementia was included on the list of medical conditions where water charges would be capped. A copy of our submission is available here.

In September 2014 Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government, Mr. Alan Kelly T.D., confirmed that those with high water consumption due to a medical condition would be entitled to have their water bills capped.

Due to recent events the system for water charges has been changed and now all water bills will be capped until at least the end of 2018. Charging will begin from 01 January 2015, with first bills to issue from April 2015. Charges will be capped at €160 for single adult households and €260 for all other households. Households that register with Irish Water will receive a water conservation grant of €100 per year. Read Irish Water's update on water charges here.

As all water bills will now be capped, there is no need for those with high water consumption due to a medical condition to apply to have their water bills capped. Further information on water charges is available on the Citizens Information website http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/environment/water_services/water_charges.html
