Ballina/Killaloe Dementia Friendly Community
Along with the primary work of providing day care and respite facilities, Watermans Lodge is also actively involved in developing strong links with the local community of Ballina / Killaloe; raising awareness of dementia and the services provided by Watermans Lodge and The Alzheimer Society of Ireland. This project aims to formalise these links, to build on them and to establish further links with other relevant groups and individuals.
There are two principal themes and associated areas of activity for the project:
1. Increasing awareness and education on dementia throughout the local community among businesses, voluntary groups and individuals, consequently reducing levels of stigma and leading to a more dementia friendly environment. This will be achieved by a public awareness campaign, delivered through a planned series of lectures, discussion groups, the distribution of educational material and the establishment of a system of formal recognition whereby individuals and organisations in Ballina/Killaloe can work towards being awarded with ‘dementia friendly’ status.
2. Identify areas of local physical infrastructure that should be improved in order to make the physical environment more dementia friendly (e.g. signage, walkways, public seating and toilets). Drawing on national and international experience of dementia friendly communities and working with local and government agencies to deliver these improvements.
