Dementia Aware Donegal


In late 2011, The Alzheimer Society of Ireland, Donegal Branch, formed a consortium with the HSE, Voice of Older People Donegal, Donegal County Council, Letterkenny Town Council, Letterkenny Institute of Technology, Highland Radio, Donegal Local Development Company, Inishowen Rural Development, the Donegal Volunteers Network and several other organisations to increase awareness of Alzheimer’s dementia. The consortium adopted the name Dementia Aware Donegal (DAD).

This consortium launched a major initiative in September 2012 to raise public awareness and understanding of Alzheimer’s and related dementias in Donegal. The awareness campaign and creative writing competition, called 'Dear Grandma' , focused on primary schools, primarily 5th and 6th class children. 

Dementia Aware Donegal are pleased to announce the winners of the creative writing competition are:

  • Poem by Laoise Ní Bhraonain from Meentinadea NS, Ardara - Memory
  • Short story by Dylan Brolly from Saint Eunan's NS, Raphoe - Granda
  • Letter by Cara Duncan from Magherabeg NS, Manorcunningham - Dear Grandma
