The Hanging Gardens by Frank McGuinness
The Alzheimer Society of Ireland recently worked in partnership with the Abbey Theatre to deliver drama workshops using excerpts from Frank McGuinness’s new play entitled ‘The Hanging Gardens’, which ran at the Abbey in October 2013.
McGuinness’s play explores the issues related to a family dealing with dementia and how they respond when a crisis arises. The partnership saw trained drama facilitators re-enact scenes from the play at Alzheimer Cafes and Social Clubs across the country.
The purpose of the project was to bring high quality drama to people living with dementia and their families so that they could explore the issues related to dementia through drama.
Through the re-enactment of scenes from the play people were invited to explore their own understanding of what was happening in the scene. The facilitators invited people to use their imagination and experience to reflect on what they had seen. After the short scene was delivered, the facilitators led the group in a discussion about their thoughts and responses.
The workshops were delivered to our Social Clubs and Alzheimer Cafés throughout the country in Wexford, Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Galway, Sligo and Mayo.
