Local campaigner John O’Brien is organising the Mount Melleray Community Silage Weekend in Waterford on Saturday, August 19th with all fundraising efforts going to The Alzheimer Society of Ireland.

The event, which will be held at Mount Melleray Abbey farm, home to Cistercian monks, and 12 miles from Glencairn, will also involve a display from the West Waterford truck and motor show, display of static engines and equipment, fun donkey derby (over 16s) and afternoon barn dancing with music by Pat Daly.
There will also be a demonstration from a team of mechanics known as The Socket Rockettes who are the only ladies team in the country capable of rebuilding a vintage tractor in a matter of minutes.
The highlight of day will be a silage cutting competition when 40 women aim to set a Guinness World Record.
The all-female silage crew – who have been dubbed the ‘Grass Gals’ – will mow, rake and draw 30 acres of silage and they also be joined by Cistercian nun, Sr Lily Scullion, from St Mary’s Abbey.
The crew has been recruited from Waterford, Tipperary, Cork and Limerick.
