Alzheimer’s Greenway Challenge
We’re delighted to present a brand new challenge – The Alzheimer’s Greenway Challenge, supported by Payzone.
This is a fun challenge along the picturesque Waterford Greenway in the sunny South East. It features an option for everyone from walkers to experienced cyclists.
On the 30th of June and 1st of July we’ll be journeying from the pretty harbour town of Dungarvan through the foothills of the Comeragh mountains and along the banks of the River Suir to finish in historic Waterford city.
Join our ambassador, Online Fitness & Nutritional Coach Dee Murphy and take on this fun challenge!!
Dee Murphy’s father, Michael Shanahan, passed away in February after living with Young-Onset Dementia (YOD). Michael was diagnosed with the condition in 2013. Kilkenny Native Dee has teamed up with The ASI to help other families in Ireland impacted by the condition.
Dee said:
“I’m honoured to team up with The Alzheimer Society of Ireland and support their Alzheimer’s Greenway Challenge. I know first-hand how vital The ASI’s services are; their support is a lifeline for families living with dementia.
‘Supporting The Alzheimer’s Greenway Challenge feels like I can give something back in a way. We hope this challenge will raise important funds for The ASI, and also encourage people to get active!”

The Challenge:
The Greenway stretches for 46 km from Dungarvan to Waterford along a disused railway line. It takes you on a journey through the incredible scenery and rich history of the area. We’ll pass through some of Ireland’s most historic places, from Viking sites to medieval ruins, Norman Castles to old railway stations. It takes you on a beautiful journey along the banks of the River Suir against the backdrop of the Comeragh mountains, across bridges viaducts and through tunnels near the spectacular Copper Coast.
Three different route options are available on this challenge to suit everyone:
- Walk the Greenway over 2 days – 30th June and 1st July
- Cycle from Dungarvan to Waterford in 1 day on the 1st of July (46km)
- Cycle from Wateford to Dungarvan and back to Waterford in 1 day on the 1st of July (92km)
