World Alzheimer’s Month – September 2019

September is World Alzheimer’s Month

World Alzheimer’s Month is an opportunity to build understanding about a health issue that will affect more and more people as the years pass, while encouraging crucial efforts to support those already affected by dementia around the world. World Alzheimer’s Day is held on Saturday, September 21st.

The Power in Language

The language we use when discussing dementia is a really important part of lifting the stigma that surrounds it.  The Alzheimer Society of Ireland has created a language guide to dementia which provides guidelines that are intended to highlight how words and language really do make a difference. The Power in Your Community

People with dementia are one of the most marginalised, socially excluded and highly stigmatised groups in society. It has been identified that exclusion from communities is all too frequently a consequence of dementia because the person often experiences reduced ability to follow the normal rules of social engagement.

In order to address the exclusion of people living with dementia, a new initiative has emerged on the landscape in the form of dementia-inclusive communities. Essentially, the initiative is about transforming our villages, towns, cities and counties into better places to live for people with dementia. Find out more about dementia-inclusive communities.

You can start on the path to becomming Dementia Inclusive by spending just two minutes watching this Dementia Awareness video. You’ll find this and lost more video resources here.
