Dementia: Understand Together – World Alzheimer’s Month 2021

World Alzheimer’s Month 2021 activities, the Dementia: Understand Together campaign has a four-part newspaper series and has also commissioned research into the population’s understanding and attitudes to dementia. Full information is available below:

 

● Article 1 (Friday September 3rd):

This week many local newspapers around the country are featuring the first in a series of Dementia: Understand Together campaign articles on different aspects of dementia as part of World Alzheimer Month. This week’s article is by Professor Iracema Leroi from the Global Brain Health Institute at Trinity College Dublin and Lewy Body Ireland. Prof Leroi explores some of the more common types of dementia and the importance of taking action if you’re worried about the disease.

 

● Article 2 (Friday September 10th):

Dementia: Understand Together series of articles in local newspapers marking World Alzheimer Month continues this week. Joan Fitzpatrick from the Living Well with Dementia programme in Dublin South writes about the benefits of music and dance and how these can overcome difficulties with language and expression for the person with dementia. ● Article 3 (Friday September 17th):

It’s the third week of World Alzheimer Month and Dementia:Understand Together’s series of articles in local newspapers marking the month continues. This week, Emma O’Brien from the HSE’s Memory Technology Resource Rooms (MTRRs) focuses on how technology can help the person with dementia. Emma highlights the availability of MTRRs in almost every county in the country, which showcase the different types of technologies and how they work, from smart homes to smart phones to smart apps.

 

● Article 4 (Friday September 24th):

It’s the final week in Dementia:Understand Together’s series of articles in local newspapers marking World Alzheimer Month. This week, Prof. Suzanne Timmons, Consultant Geriatrician and Clinical Lead, HSE’s National Dementia Office, talks about reducing our risk of dementia. Prof. Timmons focuses in particular on hearing loss and how it is the most common factor that we can change when it comes to dementia, even ahead of smoking and high blood pressure. Prof Timmons highlights ways we can mind our hearing and how to support the person with dementia who may have hearing difficulties.

 

● World Alzheimer’s Day – Tuesday, September 21st

The Dementia: Understand Together campaign commissioned research into the population’s understanding and attitudes to dementia and associated conditions. Key findings will be issued on this day.
