The Alzheimer Society of Ireland’s Response to Minister Mary Butler’s Announcement on World Alzheimer’s Day 2023

The Alzheimer Society of Ireland welcomes the announcement from Minister for Mental Health and Older People Mary Butler TD, today, regarding funding for the development of Memory Services across Ireland.

There is significant evidence that diagnosis at a Memory Clinic enhances the journey of dementia and ensures signposting to appropriate services. Timely diagnosis is an ongoing issue for people living with dementia and this is of increased importance with the recent development of disease modifying therapies which require early diagnosis.

Most importantly for our organisation this announcement is evidence of robust funding for a critical element of the Model of Care for Dementia in Ireland. This Model can only succeed with funding for implementation and today’s announcement shows meaningful commitment from Government.

I know there are people affected by dementia in communities throughout Ireland who are struggling today and every day. We at The ASI will continue to advocate for increased supports and we know this announcement may not change your life but we believe it is a hopeful and heartening first step on the road to the Model of Care for Dementia in Ireland.
